DAMON S. CALDERWOOD
Damon was born in Vancouver and raised in North Vancouver. For many years, he lived and worked in Port Coquitlam where he taught high school in School District 43. Now residing in Maple Ridge, Damon is also a professional actor in theatre, film, TV, commercials, and voice over. Damon developed a passion for birds and animals at a young age, and eventually obtained a Bachelor of Science in Animal Biology from the University of British Columbia in 1991, and a Bachelor of Education in Science and Theatre in 1995 (also at UBC).
In 1990, while preparing to photograph animals in Costa Rica, Damon met Don Waite and developed a friendship who introduced him to bird photography. Don mentored Damon over the years, and helped him publish several books on the subject, as well as several magazine articles on bird photography. In 2006, Damon and Don traveled to Oregon to photograph birds, and they also traveled to the Okanagan region of B.C. in 2007 to photograph birds.
Damon’s travels to photograph birds have taken him all over western North America, including B.C., Alberta, The Yukon, The Northwest Territories, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Hawaii. Damon’s books include Flights of Fantasy: Photographing North American Birds, Baby Birds in the Wild, and More Baby Birds in the Wild. Damon and Don’s latest venture is a children’s book called Birding for Kids, due out in August of 2017. Damon is also the proud father of a 4 year-old son Riley.
