Trip to Burns, Oregon, 25 May to 23 June 2006 with David R. James & Damon S. Calderwood.
Around 7 pm David and I drove out to the Double O Ranch to check out the Snowy Plover. We drove right into a storm. We checked out the nest and found an adult hunkered down on 2 babies and 1 egg. The winds were in gusts of 50 + miles per hour so we used the Sports Utility Vehicle as a shield for the bird on the nest. We found it strange that 2 other birds were hanging around the nest.
The next day Damon and l drove out to the nest and everything was calm and by 8 pm the sun was up and Damon was able to set up and take several photographs in just a few minutes.
Ironically the Americans had a national holiday shortly after the plovers left the nest and all-terrain vehicles criss-crossed the mudflats and very likely ran over the young. Although the Snowy Plover is threatened there wasn’t any signage telling people to not drive over the mudflats.
